I'm really enjoying my time here in Ghana and today was an awesome day. One incredible difference that I observed was that most of the people here in Ghana work very hard and a lot of Americans don't have to work nearly as hard.

We traveled to Bonwire where they make Kente clothe and it was an amazing site. When we arrived, there were a lot of people trying to get us to buy their work. Interestingly enough, there were no women selling goods, but only young men. The men came from the left and right trying to make a sale. At first they asked for ridiculously high prices for the different items but, they were all willing to lower their prices especially if you had items to trade with them. It was an incredible new experience observing what the young men do for a living..

International Study Tour- Quenice

We visited Bonwire, a village where they make Kente clothe and it was beautiful. I had the opportunity to help out with the weaving and learn how the fabric is created. They really put a lot of heart and effort into their work. While in Bonwire, I traded many items for fabrics that I was interested in. It appears that there is a great love and respect for us and they are interested in our crafts and food. The people here are really great sales persons as they will do whatever it takes to get you to buy their products. They made me realize that there is a lot in the U.S. that we take for granted while there are people in other countries who do not have half as much.

International Study Tour - Vondae

Today is day three of College Bound's International Study Tour and this experience has already changed my world view. So much has happened thus far. Starting with Anne Frank's house in Amsterdam and seeing how life was for her. All she wanted to do was be a regular teenage girl- able to have fun, play and have little crushes on boys. I realize that many basic things I take for granted such as walking out of my door, being free to go and do whatever I choose. Anne's life was the same prior to the persecution of the Jews and her having to go into hiding. I can't imagine my life being altered in such a way; it was a very emotional experience.

On IMPACT Day, they encourage their 50,000+ employees across the country to set aside their work for the day to contribute their time and talent to benefit local nonprofits. This year the event was held on Friday, June 10th and for the second year in a row Deloitte collaborated with College Bound for College Exploration Day with local middle schools.

College Bound and Deloitte employees were invited to work with 7th and 8th graders in four middle schools; Chavez Prep, Eliot-Hine, Tree of Life Public Charter School and Imagine Hope Community Charter School. Our goal was to get students to actively think about college as a viable option and explore steps they can be taking right now to prepare themselves. During our presentation, we spoke with the students about the advantages a college educated person has over those with a high school diploma including, but not limited to, better career choices, financial stability and overall better standards of living. We engaged the students in interactive activities that had them exploring careers fields they wanted to be in and the classes and activities that would provide opportunities for further exploration of their stated interests. We wrapped up the session by encouraging students to plan and write out action steps they could take as soon as this summer to begin preparing for college. We encouraged them to visit a college, speak with people who are in college and read more.

Students were also given the opportunity to learn more about College Bound through insight on the college experience by alumni Devon Robinson, Aleeah Sutton, Will Gates and Sakinah Muhamad. Aleeah, who just completed her first year at Hampton University, was very excited to share her experiences with the students: “It was refreshing to speak to a group of students who were so inquisitive about my experience. I wanted to assure them that if they became a part of College Bound they wouldn't just receive a scholarship, high school diploma and acceptance into college, but a new family that would see them through to the end of their college experience. I was able to make a group of middle school students excited about college."

This year we proudly served over 200 students. Thank you to Deloitte and their employees as well as to all the schools and students who participated it was a great day.

The event which drew over 500 people included students, parents, partners, board members, donors, and friends was held on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Howard University’s Blackburn Center. Prior to the program, reception attendees were privy to the sounds of the Max Light Jazz Quartet and harpist Sharon Strange. The 20th Annual End of the Year Celebration began with a processional of the Class of 2011 and a beautiful rendition of Lift Every Voice and Sing, sung by College Bound’s very own: Chabeli Arroyo ’13 and Indigo Myers ’11.

After a warm welcome from Executive Director Kenneth Ward, College Bound Alum Devon Robinson and Board Chair Mike Warsaw each provided greetings to the audience.

Daron Hilton, a sophomore at our Gonzaga site, introduced our keynote speaker Dr. Michael Eric Dyson. Dr. Dyson delivered a powerful and motivating speech based on our theme of “Creating a Legacy of Educational Excellence”. Highlighting the fact that a lot of students would be the first person in their family to go to college but they should never forget the people that came before them and the sacrifices that they made to create opportunities for them to achieve great things. He said do not forget the past but also do not forget to reach back and help others because that is what will keep the legacy alive.

Board Secretary, Rita Kirshstein, awarded the Hall of Fame Award to Sol and Diane Pelavin, former President/CEO and Senior Vice President of the American Institutes for Research. The Pelavins have not only been long time financial supporters of College Bound but have also provided professionals from AIR to serve as senior advisors for the Academic Mentoring Program. Timothy Woods of the Finance Committee awarded the Community Service Award to Black Entertainment Television Chairman and CEO, Debra Lee, for her outstanding work in the community and business acumen. College Bound Site Coordinators presented Site Awards for Outstanding Partner, Team Work, Most Committed Student and Exemplary Student, followed by the awarding of over of $65,000 in scholarships.

Our night ended with closing remarks from Mr. Ward and a special tribute to the Class of 2011 by pianist Carlos McMillan Fuentes.

College Bound would like to thank all who made this event possible. It was truly a joyous occasion and we look forward to another 20 years of serving the youth in our community.

On Saturday, April 30, 2011, College Bound students, partners, parents and staff participated in the 2011 Hands on DC Work-a-thon. College Bound's assigned service site was at Bunker Hill Elementary, a former stomping ground for some of our families. The volunteers at this site performed various renovation and beautification projects such as painting, mulching, and gardening . Several volunteers helped with painting various walls and murals throughout the the auditorium which will be used for their upcoming graduation. City Council Chairman, Kwame Brown joined the group to congratulate them on their efforts. In addition to volunteering College Bound also helped to raise funds for Hands on DC's scholarship program. One volunteer commented “it is always good to see people come together for a good cause and it’s really good to see young people out helping”. College Bound was excited about another opportunity to collaborate with Hands on DC and looks forward to continuing this partnership to benefit the families in the community.

Love For College Bound

What our students, parents and partners have to say about College Bound...

What I love about College Bound is the many partner/student activities as well as Monday Night Site Meet. I truly enjoyed the presentation at Howard University "A Taste of College". The presentations were awesome and the session on Financial Aid for College was outstanding. My one-on-one communication with my son's partner and site director is priceless. College Bound has our students involved in Community Service as well as Preparation for College. Thank you so much also for keeping parents, students and partners abreast of the many activities and time-lines for SAT, Financial Aid, etc. and giving us options! What a blessing!

-V. Hilton, Parent

I love that you teach children how to become "better" scholars and lifelong learners.

I love that you have "awesome"mentors/professionals working with your program (especially Ms. Nyemia - she's the BEST!)

I love that you "expose" students to opportunities and schools - that they would not have done so on their own.

I love that you teach students "responsibility" and "obligation" to participate in weekly meetings and community service opportunities.

I love that you "inspire" scholars to be their OWN advocates.

I love that my daughter, Taylor, has become more "outgoing" because of your programming and her site position.

Last but not least, I love you Mr. Ward for being such a great teacher, mentor, ED of College Bound and friend.

-D.Harrod, Parent

I love everything about College Bound, and I enjoy the many opportunities that we have in this program. I'm glad that I joined the program it is really benefiting me.

-Angel, Student

I love the dedication and caring of the College Bound staff and mentors!

-C. Ware, Partner

I love the student to whom I was assigned, and I love Derrick and everyone at Cesar Chavez.
I love the structured program, with its expectations and clarity.
I love the program that exists beyond "site" -- events, the web page.
I love how Mr. Hamburger gently helps the students with math.
I love the evening schedule -- the announcements, and especially the end of the evening when each students stands and reports good news.
I love the quiet atmosphere when everyone is focused.
I love Ken Ward -- it's thanks to him that I became a partner.

-D. Terry, Partner

I love Ms. Nichole's smile, and cheerful disposition. She is always willing to help.
I love Mr Ward and his amazing talks.
I love Ms. Katie (Alyia's mentor) she goes beyond in letting me know what's going on and always seeking advice to better her relationship with Alyia.
But most of all, I love that College Bound and I have the same agenda and working towards the same goal, not just to go to college but being prepared to stay!
Thank you for all you do.

-L. Hicks, Parent

I love what I learn during Good News - how some students struggle to think of what to mention, others have a triumph to share and all reveal something of themselves in the process.

-H. Hamburger, Math Specialist

I love college bound overall, but my respect goes toward my mentor Kyle he helped guide me through my complexities and now I am able to look at my future goals.

-Casscius, Student

I love being able to celebrate the good news in the lives of more than 30 DC teenagers (at my site).

Dear Friends,

Greetings from College Bound, where we are gearing up for another exciting year! We are currently recruiting partners to serve 150 students in our Academic Mentoring program this fall and finishing up our program calendar for the 2010-11 school year. I am thrilled to share the good news of our growth and progress, even in these challenging times, as we work to make college a reality for deserving young people in the DC Metropolitan area.

During my first year as Executive Director, I have been amazed by the outpouring of love and support that I have received. I am equally excited to kick-off our 1st Annual Back–to–School Campaign. As we are preparing for the start of the program year, your financial contribution will go a long way in helping us reach our goals. From August 1, 2010 until September 30, 2010, your gift will be MATCHED dollar for dollar by three committed donors.

As we enter our 20th year, I am excited to report that one of our students, Ashley, will be a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a Pogue Scholarship. This news is incredibly special and personal to me as she will attend UNC on the very same scholarship which made college a reality for me.

Here are some additional milestones and initiatives that we can also look forward to:

• This year, College Bound’s staff and partners will work with about 150 students at five sites: Mondays at Gonzaga High School and Sherwood Recreation Center, Wednesdays at Cesar Chavez Charter School for Public Policy and BET, and Thursdays at Beacon House. The relationships between our students and partners continue to be the essence of College Bound. Our partners represent the best of our country as they come from all backgrounds, religions, professions and ethnicities and believe that college is possible for our students.

• Through the leadership of our Programs Department, we are revamping and improving the College Bound Curriculum. We will continue with the USA Today reading initiative that we piloted last year and expand the role of our College Advisors from the American Institute of Research. Additionally, we will partner with Howard University’s MBA School to provide math assistance at each of our sites weekly.

• For the last two years we have graduated 100% of our high school seniors and enrolled all of our graduates in college. To further support our students, this fall we will kick-off The Virtual Mentoring Program to provide additional support to the class of 2010 throughout their college experience. College Bound alumni will receive additional support from volunteers to make their transition into college more successful. This initiative will also allow us to evaluate the program services that we provide and tailor them to meet the student’s needs as they transition into college life.

• We will continue collaboration with our corporate partner, Deloitte, for our 2nd Annual College Exploration Day and expose an additional 300 8th graders to college and the career paths that a college education provides.

• We are exploring the possibility of opening our SIXTH site in Ward 7 or 8. These communities have the lowest high school completion and college enrollment rates in the district and would benefit greatly from our services.

College Bound has its roots in the community, providing needed services to students that have the potential to go to college, but because of a myriad of factors they may not have the support, whether academically or financially. As you can see, so many exciting opportunities are happening at College Bound. However, the U.S. now ranks 12th in college completion among 36 developed nations. As we reach our 20th year, we need to ensure that the number of college educated Americans increases so we can compete globally.

We trust that you will support us as we rise to the challenge here in the Nation’s Capitol to improve our overall ranking as a country.

Remember, as we kick-off our Back to School Campaign, EVERY dollar (up to $11,000) that you donate will be MATCHED. That’s right; every dollar up to $11,000 will have a double impact. You can TRIPLE the impact of your donation if your employer offers a matching donation program.

Please consider making a gift to College Bound today. Your support truly makes a difference. The list below is an indication of how your contribution can make a difference here at College Bound and in the lives of the students we serve.

Ms. Arrington has a long career as a financial aid professional. For over twenty years she served as Corporate Director of Financial Aid and Title IV Compliance for Strayer University, during which time the University grew from two to nearly sixty campuses. In addition to leading the administration of the University's student financial aid programs, Ms. Arrington spearheaded the development and implementation of Strayer's student loan default management plan and built internal compliance controls which helped Strayer achieve annual Title IV compliance audits with only minimal findings. While at Strayer, Ms. Arrington coordinated the design and implementation of an online financial aid management system that has now been adopted by more than 90 institutions.

“Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It's important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It's the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.” - Dorothy Height

Those are the words of the late Dorothy Irene Height, the “godmother” of the civil rights movement, born March 24th, 1912 in Richmond Virginia to James and Fannie Height. Throughout her life, she dedicated her time to African American and Women’s Rights. Her collegiate education was at New York University where she earned the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Educational Psychology. Her civil rights work began in 1933 when she became a leader of the United Christian Youth Movement of North America. As an avid figure for African-American Civil Rights, she proudly stood alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the delivery of his reputable “I Have a Dream” speech on racial equality.

Her most notable positions by far were her roles of leadership in the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Her dedication to the NCNW started in 1937 when she was serving as the Assistant Executive Director of the Harlem YWCA. It was here that the honorable Mary McLeod Bethune invited her to join in the efforts of the NCNW against the racial and sex based discrimination of women. In 1957, Ms. Height became NCNW’s fourth National President, a position she held for many years.
Ms. Height’s involvement with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority started late in the 1930’s with her ascendency to the presidency in 1947 and continuing through 1956.

One of Dr. Height’s milestone achievements came in 1986 with the creation of the Black Family Reunion Celebration. Developed to celebrate the strengths and traditional values of the African American family this event serves as a rallying point for government agencies, private and public sector institutions, corporations, community-based organizations and families of all ethnicities to work together on solutions to issues affecting families.

Her many awards and accomplishments include the NAACP Spingarn Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal, The Franklin Roosevelt Freedom Medal, and induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. We will continue to look to her triumphs as inspiration for our own endeavors.

Over $60,000 in scholarships was distributed amongst the program participants and alumni.

Mr. Michael Blake, Deputy Associate Director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, gave an inspiring message to the audience about not succumbing to the world's perceptions of “who you are.” He instructed the audience, specifically the graduating seniors, to continue on their chosen path, pursue their goalsand defy the odds.
Donte McCormick (Site Ambassador- Beacon House), Kevohn McCormick (Beacon House) and Ciara Roberts (Site Ambassador – Gonzaga) joined Executive Director Kenneth Ward in representing College Bound at River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation on Sunday April 18th. They presented to members of the church’s congregation during the between services program called "Conversation, Controversy and Coffee." After an introduction and overview of the plethora of services provided by College Bound, the students did an awesome job of sharing their experiences in the Academic Mentoring program. They also had a chance to answer numerous questions during the Q & A period about the opportunities provided by College Bound and factors that have led them to make positive choices in the face of unrelenting peer pressure and tumultuous school environs. They were hosted by Margaret Paris of the Racial Justice Task Force and Nancy Wilson, Chair of the Conversation, Controversy and Coffee Committee.

Rodney McMillan
