The CB2 (College Bound College Buddy) program is an additional component of the Virtual Mentoring Program (VMP) which helps students transition to college life and have a successful first year. We pair first-year students at an institution with an upper-level student, a VMP participant whenever possible, at that particular school. The pair will meet twice a semester to discuss grades, social climate and other important factors that may be affecting that student's life. This peer-to-peer model makes asking for guidance less intimidating as our first-year students learn to navigate their new environment and advocate for themselves.
The National Student Clearinghouse reported that the national average for first year to second year college retention was 61 percent in 2016, with only 55 percent of black students returning for their sophomore year. In contrast, 84 percent of VMP first-year students returned for their sophomore year fall 2018. Through the CB2 Program we aim to increase the sophomore retention rate to 100% for fall 2019.
